RC Flying Things: How Do I Start?..

  • 3D

    Hello!

TL;DR: I’ve built a shitty plane and I have no flying buddies.

I’ve been occasionally flying a small drone for a season in the riverside park and in my backyard, but then I’ve built a plane and oh my god, I can not get handle of controlling this thing. I might be doing it wrong, but here’s how my “let’s go fly thing thing” road trip goes: first, I pack it all up in the car, then drive around aimlessly in the bushes near “I was told there’s a nice spot here” until I find an open area where nobody can see my embarrassment, then I spend 20 min assembling the plane and setting up the radio, then I start it up with an immediate crash, and then I spend another 40 mins in attempts to fix it in the field until it gets dark and I pack up.
I must add that my wife who acts as in-volunteer spotter, is NOT into this hobby. Like, at all :-(

Flying drone in the park is kinda-sorta okay since it’s easy to find the time when there is no people around, and a drone doesn’t need much space. I don’t think flying a plane in the park is a good idea: it needs more space, therefore more chances to encounter people.

I’ve been living in Kamloops for about 4 years now, but being a complete nerd I didn’t go out much. What are good spots to fly?..

I know planes are awesome. I want to learn to fly them. And, sadly, I have no idea how, where and when to fly this thing.

Is there anyone seeking for a weekend fly buddy / padawan?..

  • @toxuin have you liked into these guys? http://www.kmasrc.ca/

Saw them at “meet the machines” last weekend. I think they even have an airstrip.

  • I believe there’s an airstrip up by Dufferin elementary school…

  • There are also these guys: http://www.highcountryflyers.org/
Looks like they fly out of the Ranch ball diamonds out past Raleigh and are having a bunch of events there. Would be a good field to practice on if it’s not in use but I don’t know how to check for availability: http://www.tournamentcapital.com/fields.htm#Softball

I’m a little surprised you haven’t gone for the full VR headset yet!

  • Back when he was my roommate in college, @Gonzo007 was a member of a local park-flyer club. I can probably get him to hook you up with the contact info of any of those guys that still fly in town.

  • @toxuin Interesting project. I wouldn’t mind learning more about it also.

I spoke to @Gonzo007 this morning. He mentioned these guys too. Apparently they have one of the best fields in BC and teach lessons.

@toxuin, sounds like we have some helpful resources suggested. Enough to call the issue solved perhaps?
