Arduino stuff at Princess Auto
I was just at Princess Auto and noted several Arduino shields in their surplus section:
- Ethernet $20
- Tinderkit $20
- Proto $15
- LCD $20
- Tinerkit Base $50
I guess these are for the UNO? I don’t know much about Arduinos. But they’re certainly too big to fit on my Nano!
I haven’t checked regular pricing to know if these are a good deal or not.
They also had other random electronics kits and components. I bought a couple of solar panel (6 V and 0.55V) $5 each.
When these first hit Princess Auto, I did a quick comparison to figure out if we needed to buy a bunch of them. Concluded that if we needed specific shields in any quantity, we are better off bulk-ordering from China. Here’s a quick summary of what I’d priced out using one of the suppliers that I deal with frequently:
@pierre Wow! Thanks for that detailed comparison. Good to know that not everything is a surplus section is a good deal.
I could see grabbing the proto shield at the high price if I were mid-project, and needed one and did not want to wait for shipment. Most of the tinkerkit stuff is discontinued, so my tendency is to not climb the learning curve on it at this point unless I get a ton of it for such a low price that I can’t pass it up.
If I needed DMX stuff, there are RS485 chips that will do the job for a buck or so mounted to the protoshield. They provide no protection or isolation, but neither does this shield. They suffer the same software bugs as the shield too, since either way, the arduino is generating all the signals in software, and the chip just does voltage translation.
