List of other makerspaces in BC
I am making a list of other makerspaces in BC. Here is what I have so far:
- Lower Mainland
- Vancouver Island
Do you know about any other makerspaces in our province that I have missed? I am sure there are more. I know there are a few in the Kootenay area as well, but I could not find their site. Let me know and I’ll add them to this list.
These are not makerspaces per se … but they are online electronics component stores in BC. :
- http://www.bc-robotics.com … I think this may be associated with a robotics club in Nanaimo
- http://revolutionprinters.com/ … I just cracked the barrel on the 3mm extruder on the 3D printer and am getting some parts from here as I switch to 1.75mm
- seacans.com … Vancouver supplier of 3d printer filament … not sure if the material is any good as I just ordered
- Lee’s Electronics in Vancouver
- RP Electronics in Vancouver
I do not know where other people look locally for parts (in BC)? Usually more expensive per part than a US supplier but often come out less expensively after shipping and taxes.
I was just in the lower mainland and visited the new RP Electronics http://www.rpelectronics.com/ store. Its awesome compared
to any of the others (and compared to the old RP electronics store).
I’ve also ordered Raspberry Pi’s and accessories from Lee’s Electronics http://www.leeselectronic.com/index.php
I think I have one of each color of PLA that Seacans sells, and I’m quite happy with it.
I helped put together this list when I was in the lower mainland: http://vancouverroboticsclub.org/2011/07/17/links-to-companies-vendors-etc/
I also found a guy recently in Montreal who sells metric nuts and bolts. He’s on ebay as user http://www.ebay.com/usr/northenmoi?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2754 He charges a max of $9.95 shipping, and I got better prices by contacting him directly at: firstname.lastname@example.org (His ebay store doesn’t seem to calculate the shipping properly).
Great to find your site and organization. I am a teacher in Abbotsford BC who has created a mobile after school Makerspace program for kids ages 9+.
Here is my website - www.gearbots.org
I have added you to the Ministry of Education list of community Makerspaces.
@gearbots your website did not load for me, but I am glad to hear about your effort. There is also a recent group that is trying to connect all the makerspaces across Canada, you should add your mobile makerspace to it: http://makingmakers.ca/
http://tworiversgallery.ca/learn-create/makerlab-2rg/ is a great space in Prince George. They are running their annual Mini Maker Faire on September 19th this year.
There’s also Maker Labs down in Chinatown here in Vancouver (780 East Cordova St.). Makerlabs.com
@gearbots Hi There, Just in case you haven’t heard of them, there’s another group in the lower mainland (mostly Vancouver I believe) that have a mobile maker bus for youth. They’re called the Maker Mobile http://www.makermobile.org/
