Job Postings?

  • Is there any Makerspace policy about posting job openings here?

    BrianB

  • We have had postings in the past. There are members in search of work, and potential members who would like to sign up if they had the money. Giving them the opportunity to snag those jobs seems like a no-brainer.

When we still did Hack nights at KIC, iTel used to buy snacks and parts for projects and write it off as a business expense… Danny explained it to me one day as “A much cheaper way to figure out who you want to work with than the traditional interview/recruiting model.”

  • OK, thanks. We are actually looking for at least 4 people right now. Here is a general blurb about the company, and then I’ll post each job position separately. If you are interested or know anyone who is, let me know at brian@controlgrips.com.
Scorpion Technologies Ltd. is a Kamloops based ISO 9001-2008 certified manufacturer and distributor of industrial control grips, joysticks, pendant controls, control boxes, radio remotes and associated accessories. Our products are typically used on heavy duty mobile equipment in the agricultural, construction, marine, forestry, municipal, and mining industries. We have also supplied products for a diverse range of other applications, including martial arts scoring systems, motion pictures (both on and off screen), the aerospace industry, hobby level quilting machines, and golf carts.
The owner and staff have been building these kinds of products since 1995. Over this time our product line has expanded to include many different grip and joystick models and a broad range of accessories. While we offer many “stock” items, the majority of our products are customized to fit each customer’s exact needs. We are developing new controls and accessories on an ongoing basis.
Scorpion’s core philosophy is to manufacture and merchandise top quality reasonably priced products and to give our customers before and after sales service that is “second to none”. We are constantly striving to make our products and/or service even better, and welcome any suggestions for new products or improvements to our existing ones.
We have 4 job openings right now:

    1. Sales/marketing person
    2. Production technician
    3. Administrative assistant
    4. Website development assistant

  • Position #1: Sales/Marketing

We are looking for a marketing/sales person. Annual growth is about 15% right now (with no marketing efforts), but we want to accelerate that rate and protect our existing sales volume. We have had several marketing/sales people over the years but have struggled to find the right person.

Until recently we had a local competitor (Sure Grip Controls) that has successfully kept 2 to 3 sales people busy. Sure Grip sells much the same products at the same price, so we know this position can be filled.

The right person will develop and implement (this is not just a marketing position, sales will be involved) an ongoing marketing/sales strategy. We currently have no active marketing or sales efforts, so the new person will be the entire marketing/sales department. Our most successful efforts in the past have consisted of identifying potential customers (we have in excess of 10,000 already identified), cold calls, and follow ups. We have tried magazine advertising, tradeshows, fax blasting, etc. with very few positive results.

While a knowledge of hydraulics/electrics would be very beneficial, we have always taken the position that the skills needed are more in the marketing/sales areas and that the technical knowledge can be learned. We have several tech people on staff that can provide technical support and backup for the marketing/sales person.

    We can offer:
    - long term employment with a stable, growing company
    - a base salary and commission
    - medical and dental (after 3 month probation period)
    - RRSP matching
    - fun informal working environment
    - Monday to Friday days with almost no travel
    - 2 cats to pet as desired
    - After hours access to our really cool shop facilities

    We require:
    - someone who can work relatively unsupervised
    - someone who can prioritize and adapt their marketing/sales approach as needed
    - no sleazy Herb Tarlek used car salesman tactics

  • Position #2: Assembly Technician(s)

We require at least one additional assembly technician. The job consists of assembling our control grips, joysticks, and associated electronics, along with (possibly) some new product design. The right person needs a strong electronics background and a good mechanical ability. MSOffice skills are necessary, and knowledge of Solidworks, Eagle and CorelDraw would be a plus.

    We can offer:
    - long term employment with a stable, growing company
    - a competitive wage
    - medical and dental (after 3 month probation period)
    - RRSP matching
    - fun informal working environment
    - Monday to Friday days
    - after hours shop access (we have a lot of cool machinery/toys)
    - 2 cats to pet as desired

    We require:
    - someone who can work relatively unsupervised
    - someone who can cope with a constantly changing list of tasks and keep their priorities in order and stay organized

  • Position #3: Administrative Assistant

We are looking for an administrative assistant to help with the day to day running of the office. Duties would (possibly) include: order processing, inventory control, shipping, receiving, accounting entry, account follow ups, phone answering and other general office duties. A knowledge of MSOffice and general accounting principles is important.

    We can offer:
    - long term employment with a stable, growing company
    - a competitive wage
    - medical and dental (after 3 month probation period)
    - RRSP matching
    - fun informal working environment
    - Monday to Friday days
    - after hours shop access (we have a lot of cool machinery/toys)
    - 2 cats to pet as desired

    We require:
    - someone who can work relatively unsupervised
    - someone who can cope with a constantly changing list of tasks and keep their priorities in order and stay organized

  • Position #4: Website Development Assistant

We are looking for an assistant to help finish the development of our new website. This would be a (probably) temporary position and could be either part or full time. The largest part of the job will consist of formatting photos and drawings to get a consistent look for all of our products. A good knowledge of CorelDraw, CorelPhotoPaint and (hopefully) Solidworks is more important that knowledge of web software. Photography skills would be useful as well.

    We can offer:
    - a competitive wage
    - fun informal working environment
    - Monday to Friday days
    - after hours shop access (we have a lot of cool machinery/toys)
    - 2 cats to pet as desired

    We require:
    - someone who can work relatively unsupervised
    - someone who can cope with a constantly changing list of tasks and keep their priorities in order and stay organized
